Human-induced climate change is causing irreversible damage to the natural world on which we are so dependent. It is our duty to speak out and do what we can to prevent further harm.
Our children have the right to inherit a planet as rich and diverse as the one we have enjoyed. This right is also enshrined in Article 112 of the Norwegian Constitution.
The Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 °C is no longer realistic. The pace of the transition must accelerate significantly to keep warming below 2 °C and prevent further damage to the environment.
We must work towards and commit to an international plan to phase out fossil fuels as rapidly as possible, replacing them with carbon-free and renewable energy.
Norway must:
- Scale back and end exploration for new oil and gas, particularly in the Arctic.
- Give priority to saving energy and reduce the consumption of natural resources.
- Do far more to protect nature, on land and in our lakes and oceans.
- Increase climate finance for countries bearing the burden of climate change.
As grandparents, we call on politicians from all parties to show courage, determination and a sense of urgency and do everything in their power to keep global warming below 2°C. Our descendants deserve no further delays in climate action.
At the climate summit in Türkey, Norway must show leadership and go forward with a good example. The future of every child on our planet is at stake!
